CHAPTER TWENTY NINE

“I need to get to work,” Smith told the nurse who had come to check on him. “I need to go home and change and then I need to get to work. Who do I speak to about getting me out of here?”

The nurse shook his head. “You do seem to be much better this morning. How’s the head?”

“One hundred percent,” Smith lied.

There was still a dull throbbing over his left eye, but he decided he’d had worse.

“Could you please find someone to come and let me out?”

Ten minutes later, Dr Barnes came inside the room and stopped by the bed. Smith was already fully dressed and sitting on the edge of the bed.

“How are you feeling?” Dr Barnes asked.

“I’ll be better when I get out of here,” Smith told him. “There’s nothing wrong with me.”

Dr Barnes nodded. “You do have some colour in your face this morning. I’d like you to take this and hand it in to the pharmacy. I’ve also taken the liberty of signing a document that states you are fit to return to work. I know how petty they can be in your profession.”

He handed Smith a prescription and a doctor’s note.

“Thanks,” Smith said. “I appreciate it. What’s the prescription for?”

“It’s similar to Ibuprofen, but only available with a prescription. Try to keep some at hand wherever you go, and whenever you notice the warning signs take two tablets as soon as possible.”

“Warning signs?”

“If you feel a tension above one eye,” Dr Barnes elaborated. “Or you feel the onset of the aura, take the medication and most of the time the full migraine will not materialise.”

“And if it does?”

“We’ll deal with that when it happens. Good luck, DS Smith.”

Theakston and Fred were more annoyed than happy to see Smith. The old Bull Terrier and the repulsive Pug were clearly not pleased about being left outside all night. Smith let them in through the back door and filled both their bowls to the brim with food. It was only after they’d eaten every last morsel that they even acknowledged Smith.

“I’m sorry, boys,” Smith leaned down and patted them both. “This time it wasn’t my fault. I’m afraid I’m going to have to love you and leave you again. I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”

He opened the back door again and both dogs looked at him as though he’d lost his mind. Fred seemed especially displeased. The Pug’s eyes bulged out as he glared at Smith.

“Do I have to remind you that you are actually dogs?” Smith said as they both stubbornly refused to go back outside. “And that normally means that I’m your boss and not the other way around.”

Eventually they conceded, but not without scowling at Smith to let him know how annoyed they were with him.

After a quick shower and a change of clothes Smith made his way to work. He realised he’d left the bag containing the prescription he’d picked up from the pharmacy on the kitchen table while he was enduring the wrath of the dogs.
